A Showcase of South Carolina Artistically Gifted Students: Application Instructions/Information for All Applicants
What is Piccolo Spoleto Rising Stars?
The goal of Piccolo Spoleto Rising Stars series is to provide artistically talented youth of South Carolina with a high profile performance venue that recognizes their exceptional talent. The performances will be presented during the 2010 Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C., May 28 to June 13. The six Rising Stars Programs will start on Monday, May 31 and continue on Wednesday, June 2; Friday-June 4, Monday, June 7; Wednesday, June 9 and conclude on Friday, June 11. Each of the six Rising Stars Programs (75 minutes in length) will be held at 4:00 pm and will feature four to six young artists and/or ensembles in a conversation and performance format.
Who is eligible?
The programs will feature South Carolina students between 9 and 18 years of age, who are not full-time college students. Students who are gifted visual artists, actors, dancers, writers, solo musicians (instrumental or vocal), and ensemble groups (of no more than 12 members), may apply.
How can I apply?
• Complete the application form that applies to your arts area. Each solo/ensemble
and arts area has a different application form.
• Create a CD/DVD to showcase your artistic talent:
* Visual artists should submit five to seven works in one medium. The media are drawing, painting, printmaking or sculpture.
* Actors should submit up to 10 minutes of monologue material. There may be two different monologues to show contrasting styles.
* Dancers should submit up to 10 minutes of classical dance that may be in two different styles. For the audition DVD, the music may be recorded. For performance at the Rising Stars Programs, live piano accompaniment will be utilized.
* Writers should submit up to 10 minutes of poetry or verse. Contrasting styles are acceptable.
* Solo musicians and ensembles should submit up to 10 minutes of a musical performance consisting of no more than two different works.
NOTE: If selected for a Rising Star Program, your performance will be approximately six minutes.
When are applications due and when will I receive notification if I am accepted to perform?
Applications must be received by Monday, March 1, 2010. All applicants will be notified of their application status by March 31, 2010. Those selected to perform on the Rising Stars Programs will be notified at that time of the date and procedures for their performance.
If selected, what are my responsibilities?
• If selected, you will receive a letter of agreement to perform on a specific date.
• You will have seven days to return the letter accepting the performance date.
• All performers are responsible for their travel to Charleston and lodging.
• On the day of your performance, or in the case of visual artists your conversation, you will arrive at the theatre by 1:00 pm for instructions and rehearsal before the 4:00 pm performance. A public reception will follow
each program.
Who will select the Rising Stars’ participants?
A three-person panel for each of the arts areas will select those to be featured. Each panel is composed of professionally trained artists and representatives from higher education institutions. The three panel members also are chosen to represent the geographic areas of the Upstate, Midlands, and Lowcountry.
What assistance will Piccolo Spoleto Rising Stars provide?
• If needed, a piano accompanist.
• If needed: music stands, piano and/or a Marley floor.
• Rising Stars staff will hang art work for exhibition and cover it with acetate.
