Youth Outreach Intern - Charleston Habitat for Humanity

The Youth Outreach Intern will work in partnership with our Volunteer Coordinator and other Charleston Habitat for Humanity staff to develop solid and organized programs for youth ages 6-25 to become aware, educated, and activated leaders of Habitat’s mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Research - become familiar with CHFH’s current youth outreach programs, including campus chapter leaders and other youth activities as well as resources made available by Habitat International. In addition, research youth programs existing at other Habitat affiliates around the U.S.
• Research funds available to youth initiated activities (such as State Farm)
• Exploration - obtain and identify contact information for key leaders in public and private schools, colleges, as well as Charleston area church youth groups and other youth organizations such as Boys and Girls Clubs and Scouts
• Create educational and advocacy activities at age appropriate levels and implement them in classrooms and meetings
• Identify and implement new groups/locations to begin Habitat Campus Chapters
• Partner with teachers and administrators to offer curriculum as well as fundraising and advocacy activities.(cans for Habitat, letter writing, parent party, off site builds)
• Ensure a sustainable youth program that will continue beyond your internship commitment.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
• College junior or senior - preferably with a concentration on education or youth leadership
• Flexible schedule
• Must have own transportation
• Minimum B average (80%)
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and internet research
• Outgoing personality with excellent speaking skills
• Familiarity and/or experience with Habitat for Humanity is preferred

SCHEDULE: (can be modified to work with school requirements and schedule)
• For fall or spring positions: 125 hours (averages at 16 weeks at 8 hours/week)
• For summer positions: 200 hours (20 hours a week for 10 weeks)
• Flexible schedule based on goals set at beginning of internship

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Weekly scheduling if flexible with personal class schedules and commitments. Computer, desk, and office supplies will be provided at the CHFH office at 731 Meeting Street. This internship is unpaid, but we will provide documentation for school credit. By participating in the internship, you can experience a career in the non-profit business world and gain valuable skills for any future job.
