Director of Development - Charleston Symphony Orchestra

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra (Charleston, SC) seeks a full-time Director of Development. This position reports to the Executive Director and works in close collaboration with the Board of Directors’ Vice President of Development, the Development Committee and Board of Directors to prepare and implement an effective multi-year development plan with goals and strategies updated annually. The Director of Development is responsible for the development, management, implementation and evaluation of an overall fundraising program consistent with the needs and goals of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. The Director of Development plans and implements all development activities, including the annual campaign, corporate sponsorships, grant applications, donor stewardship and new revenue-generating initiatives such as a planned giving society. In addition, the Director of Development serves as the Orchestra’s staff liaison to the CSO League and CSO affiliate organizations regarding fundraising efforts that involve or benefit the Orchestra.

DUTIES/MAJOR FUNCTIONS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Fundraising: Develop and conduct an effective annual campaign that includes individual, corporate and foundation support, sponsorships, grants, government support and special projects.

Develop and implement the solicitation and acknowledgement process, maintenance of records and establishment and disclosure of donor benefits within IRS guidelines; monitor progress through accurate reporting, analysis and integration of data using Raiser’s edge (RE).

Develop and implement a corporate sponsorship program; research and identify potential sponsors; prepare proposals and work with Executive Director and Board to identify matches between CSO programs and company interests; assists on sponsorship asks.

Interact with donors, businesses and community leaders in cultivation of new prospects and volunteers in the execution of fundraising initiatives.

Assess goals, previous campaigns and economic trends and develop strategies that will drive fund development activities both strategically and operationally over the short and long term.

Develop an ongoing planned giving program; work with Board to identify, cultivate and solicit prospects.

Budgeting and Planning: Work with the Executive Director, VP of Development and Development Committee of the Board in establishing appropriate goals for the Annual Campaign; develop a plan for achieving those goals and establish a master calendar that outlines all fundraising events and campaigns; coordinate all activities with the CSO’s concert calendars and the CSO League’s calendar.

Develop budgets for each event and campaign; monitor the progress of each and adjust plans when necessary.

Monitor in-kind contributions.

Board: Staff the Development Committee of the Board.
Report to the Board and Executive Committee on progress of all development activities.

Develop Board and volunteer leadership through participation in Board committee meetings and ongoing donor cultivation efforts; participate in identifying and recruiting new leadership.

Recommend fundraising policies and procedures to the Executive Director, Development Committee and Board with the goal of building a program that demonstrates the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct.

Administrative: Work in concert with Director of Patron Services to maintain all donor files and records.

Implement the timely production of reports needed for decision-making and performance tracking within the development office.

Provide donor lists and statistical data for program books, auditors and other public records.

Develop policies and procedures pertaining to the use of the RE system including maintenance of a written protocol manual for agency use of RE.

Other: Develop and maintain internal and external contracts to optimize fundraising efforts.

Maintain and nurture ongoing contacts with contributors, sponsors, and business and community leaders.

Keep abreast of recent research on fundraising; maintain a collection of current fundraising resource material.
Attend other civic and cultural events in the community.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

REQUIREMENTS: This position requires familiarity with resources and current research in fundraising, excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, proficiency in Raiser’s Edge and ability to perform hands-on database management and reporting and an ability to lead the CSO toward budgetary goals.

Other qualifications include: Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree a plus.

Five to seven years or more of fundraising experience with demonstrated history of growing and achieving revenue targets as well as demonstrated leadership ability.

Superior organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks.
Fluidity in movement between working independently and as part of a team on a continual basis.

Experience in arts and culture, knowledge of a symphony orchestra environment a plus.

Creative thinker and innovator.

Association of Fundraising Professionals/CFRE International memberships a plus.
