EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR - CHARLESTON COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY SYSTEM
Under the direct supervision of the Library Board of Trustees, the Executive Director plans and directs all phases of library operations for Charleston County. Administers the professional, financial, personnel and business activities of the Charleston County Public Library system.
Confers with and advises division heads on successes and problems related to the administration of library services.
Works with the Charleston County Administrator to coordinate library planning with County needs by attending meetings for department heads, Elected and Appointed Officials and County Council as needed.
Understands and is knowledgeable about the County’s community, culture, lifestyles and interests. Studies methods and makes plans to develop library services to more effectively meet the present and future community needs for library services. Establishes programs and services for the library consistent with community expectations.
Evaluates existing technical programs and practices. Investigates new library technologies, techniques and procedures. Revises present methods to improve services.
Oversees the operational and maintenance considerations of the physical facilities. Assists with the management of new capital projects and major facility renovations.
Attends Library Board meetings to suggest, discuss and promote policies concerning library services, buildings, finances, equipment and employees. Recommends policies and advises the Library Board of the policy’s impact on operations and services. Reviews procedural and operational details for refinements.
Presents written and verbal reports keeping the Library Board informed about policies, operations and services.
Supervises preparation of the annual budget and justifies the annual budget estimates. Monitors expenditures and recommends amendments/changes to the Library Board.
Plans and implements programs and activities focusing on staff development.
Maintains liaison with South Carolina State Library.
Serves in an advisory capacity to the Friends of the Charleston County Public Library.
QUALIFICATIONS: ALA-accredited Master of Library Science degree and ten (10) or more years of progressively responsible professional administrative experience with five (5) years as Library Director/Assistant Director in a library system or demonstrated ability to achieve superior results in a progressive library system. Ability to work closely with the Library Board of Trustees; excellent leadership skills and knowledge of the newest library trends; excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated commitment to public libraries including best practices of librarianship and familiarity with emerging technologies; experience in budget planning and administration; passionate leadership and visionary management experience; outstanding informational analysis and problem solving abilities in decision making; skilled in building relationships with stakeholders throughout the community; enthusiasm and dedication to spreading the vision of the library system; gathering information on the culture, lifestyles, concerns and condition of the community to determine library services; strategic planning; operational and maintenance considerations of the physical facility; assisting in the management of capital/building projects. Eligible for or hold South Carolina State Library certification. A valid South Carolina driver’s license with a safe driving record.
SALARY RANGE: $101,275.20 - $124,571.20 annually, depending on qualifications.
