Stage Manager - Charleston Stage

The Stage Managers work with each shows director to coordinate Charleston Stage’s Productions. This includes creating and maintaining all pre-rehearsal paperwork, acting as Stage Manager for all rehearsals and performances as well as supervising the assistant stage management crews and production running crews made up of TheatreWings High School Apprentices for each show and calling each performance of the shows they are hired for.

Charleston Stage Company has a two-fold mission. To produce quality productions with high production values while at the same time providing hands on professional learning experiences for the young people the company serves.

Candidates will oversee 4 of the 8 productions: the possible choices are out of 4 Mainstage and 4 family series shows at the 758 Seat College of Charleston Sottile Theatre. For more information about these shows visit www.charlestonstage.com

TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: Candidates should be working towards completing a degree in theatre with an emphasis in stage management and have worked as a stage manager in a professional theatre setting. Experience with large cast musicals is preferred. Experience in training and working with highly motivated young people is also preferred.

SKILLS: Candidates should have a well rounded working knowledge of all areas of production and production coordination in training and scheduling running crews, and coordinating sound, lights, costumes, technical theatre, sets, etc.

Candidates should be well-organized, forward thinkers, problem solvers and should execute these skills in a positive and supportive manner. Strong computer skills (preferably Mac based) are essential. Candidates should be highly competent with such programs as Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with databases and graphics programs helpful.

Candidates should be knowledgeable of Equity rules under which (even for non-Equity shows) Charleston Stage Company generally adheres to.

RESPONSIBILTIES: Duties include but are not limited to the following:

1) STAGE MANAGEMENT
Charleston Stage’s Stage Manager will be responsible for creating and maintaining all pre-rehearsal paperwork, acting as Stage Manager for all rehearsals and performances as well as supervising the assistant stage management crews and production running crews made up of TheatreWings High School Apprentices for each show and calling each performance of the shows they are hired for. These students record blocking, take line notes, perform in the absence of an actor at rehearsals, perform the shifts during rehearsals, track and map all props and furniture and call the shows.

Stage Management Duties Include:
* To Stage Manage 4 shows each season.
* To teach, train and supervise the TheatreWings Apprentices in crewing all productions.
* To prepare all production paperwork before rehearsals begin and maintain during the rehearsal process. This includes: Contact sheets, Rehearsal schedules, Conflict Calendar, Prompt script, Shift sheets, Prop lists/plots, Costume plots, Sound plots

2) THEATREWINGS APPRENTICE PROGRAM
Charleston Stage’s TheatreWings High School Apprentice Program, now in its 26th year, is an intense, hands-on, pre-professional theatre-training program for students in grades 9-12. Students work side by side with Charleston Stage Company’s directing and technical theatre professionals learning set design and construction, props, costumes, stage management, lighting, sound and special effects skills. Participants serve as backstage running crews during tech rehearsals and performances of Charleston Stage shows. The key to the success of this program and to the smooth running of our productions is in insuring that our TheatreWings Apprentices are thoroughly trained for the tasks to which they are being assigned.

TheatreWings Apprentice Program Duties Include:
1) To oversee TheatreWings Apprentices in assisting to stage managing productions.
2) To train and supervise TheatreWings Crews.
3) To approve and coordinate conflicts and substitutes for crews.
4) Communicate tech and rehearsal schedules to crews.
5) To schedule crews to attend rehearsals and crew training sessions or shadowing sessions.

3) ACTING COMPANY
Charleston Stage Company casts shows from 3 main sources of talent. A Resident Professional Acting Company of four who are theatre graduates contracted for 10 months to perform and teach in the education program, some equity actors on guest artist contracts and actors from our local community. The Stage manager will serve as liaison to all members of the acting company. We have a reputation for professionalism and we value our actors’ time, commitment and talent. It is important to us that actors feel appreciated and supported by all members of our staff.

Acting Company Duties Include:
1) Communicating rehearsal schedules and schedule changes to all actors.
2) Compiling and maintaining a schedule of actors conflicts for rehearsals.
3) Assembling actor bios, scene lists, musical number lists and other program information.
4) Providing actors with information about complimentary tickets, and Parking locations as needed.
